Well – what a whirl wind start to the year it has been so far!

We have some very exciting news – we are off to LA & New York tomorrow to be inspired & excited by all that they have to offer! Stay tuned for some amazing pics & great recommendations when we get back!

In more exciting news – product development is finished on our Autumn/Winter range & it is now in production. We will be showcasing our new range at the Life Instyle trade fair in February…so feel free to come & visit us there! This is our first of many blogs to featuring young, upcoming & inspiring Australian designers & most importantly friends of us here at Arlington Milne. The first to feature is our very good friend Kelly Searl – loving owner of Pony Rider…

We love her products & they feature heavily in both of our homes. She is a great girl & an inspiring business women. Below are some questions she kindly answered for me, to get an insight into her work, family & her favourite things…ENJOY!!!

YOUR PRODUCTS ARE STUNNING & UNIQUE – HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN STYLE?
Pony style is fairly masculine, industrial and bold. We always develop seasonal ranges that change for current trends. At the moment I’m right into North American styling with detailed prints and bright modern flouros, with earthy base cloths.This masculine feminine approach generally stays as part of how I design but the looks can change quite dramatically.

WHICH AUSTRALIAN DESIGNERS, BRANDS OR CREATIVE PEOPLE ARE YOU FOLLOWING/LOVING RIGHT NOW? & WHY?
Oh that’s a hard one, I love loads of different creatives, most of my friends are amazingly talented people but to name a few brands or concepts that I like in Australia are Monster Children – hubby, Alice McCall, Elke Kramer, Lover, Woodford & Co………..oh and Arlington Milne of course

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK INVOLVE?
Well it takes me a couple of hours to get to work after drop off for a few kids and packing the puppy into the car, so by the time I get here I am pooped and in need of a good strong cuppa. followed by my email inbox which takes me a good hour to get through all the emails – then I make lists for the day and resolve yesterdays at the same time, then I am either in production, management or design mode for the rest of the day, I try and focus on one at a time but it is never the case, I am quite random in my work approach.

WHAT IS YOUR CAREER BACKGROUND? HOW DID YOU COME TO OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I studied Design Visual communication and initially was in advertising working on branding and broadcast design. We kinda did a bit of everything but I really enjoyed print design the most, from there I moved over into fashion working for labels such as OneTeaspoon, Sass & Bide, Tigerlily, Volcom and Munster some of them freelance based some of them full term. However I fell in love and married my beautiful husband and I got up the duff so a full time role and the pressure I was under wasn’t going to work so I thought why not start my own business and really stress myself out……. hence the birth of Pony Rider after my second child Dylan was born at 2 months of age!

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I would still be designing for labels I am sure. I love it, I can’t help myself. I tend to feel a little flat if I’m not doing something inspiring.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THIS YEAR?
That you have to work hard to make your business succeed. I have been pretty fortunate that people have responded well to Pony Rider, but it is a constant challenge and never finalised.
I like that about this business, It constantly changes as do I.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 GOALS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
Consolidate what Pony Rider is to it’s audience
Branch out into a few new categories within the business
Get the bloody website working properly – it’s a pest
Have a good time with my family, maybe a trip to the states to live for a while. we are thinking NY
Renovate our house
Probably have another baby

Shit that’s 6 sorry!

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY?
Okay perfect day would be to start with a meditation followed by a latte and croissant for dipping.
Mid morning would be a nice stroll over the headland followed by brunch with the girls at the Boat House.
Then take the kids to the beach for a surf then catch up with friends for a pear cider in the afternoon somewhere
followed by dinner with friends ex kids out somewhere………. I do love my kids but they are not easy to take out yet under 5’s category.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSESSION?
My children are my most prized possession. Little buggers. They sure know how to rev me up but they are the funniest mini people I know.

WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR CREATIVE INSPIRATION?
BLOGS, MAGAZINES???
blogs, tumbler sites, books, flicker, pinterest, web!

FAVOURITE PLACE LOCALLY?
Favourite place locally is Broken Head.

FAVOURITE THING IN YOUR HOUSE?
My new bed, it’s massive and we got our friend to make it out of sand blasted oregon, smells divine.

FAVOURITE SMELL?
I love the smell of gardenia’s. Reminds me of my nanna…

FAVOURITE COCKTAIL OR DRINK?

FAVOURITE MEAL & WHERE?
Ohh I just had a cracking dessert at The Sailor Club, Tiramisu – holy shit it was a calorie counter!

FAVOURITE BOOK?
Photographic books are good. Annie Leibovitz – At work

I fucking suck at writing in cursive, I’ll never be romantic

the stores are uber cool as are the clothes.

to be honest everything about jack is the cool. we managed to pick up the autumn lookbook below are a look at the pages & the store, we love it – so inspiring…

…well firstly let me just say – i know this was a little excessive…& yes I did get a little carried away…
…okay that said, I had a massive donna hay bake off…last weekend & below is what I came up with!

Made three lots of super delicious cookies & loved them all…although you just can not beat a good anzac!

Hope you enjoy them as much as the family & I did…& thanks Donna – you are a super star!

ANZAC BUSCUITS

1 cup (90g) rolled oats
1cup (150g) plain (all-purpose) flour
⅓ cups (150g) caster (superfine) sugar
¾ cup (60g) desiccated coconut
2 tablespoons golden syrup
125g butter
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of (baking) soda
2 tablespoons hot water

Preheat oven to 160°C (320ºF). Mix the oats, flour, sugar and coconut in a bowl. Place the golden syrup and butter in a saucepan over low heat and melt. Mix the bicarbonate of soda with the water and add to the butter mixture. Add to the dry ingredients and mix well. Place tablespoons of the mixture, leaving space between each one for spreading, onto baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper and flatten to about 7cm in diameter. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until a deep brown. Cool on trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Makes 28.

CHOC CHIP COOKIES

180g unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup (120g) brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups (300g) plain (all-purpose) flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder, sifted
150g dark chocolate, chopped

Preheat oven to 180ºC. Place the butter, sugar and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until pale and creamy. Gradually add the eggs and beat well. Add the flour and baking powder and beat until a smooth dough forms. Fold through the chocolate. Roll 2 tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls, place on baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper and press to flatten. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool on the trays. Makes 12.

STAR COOKIES

250g butter
¾ cup (275g) caster (superfine) sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 egg yolk
2¼ cups (335g) plain (all-purpose) flour, sifted
½ cup clear sanding sugar*

Preheat oven to 180°C (355°F). Place the butter and sugar in an electric mixer and beat until pale and creamy. Add the vanilla and egg yolk and beat well to combine. Add the flour and beat until a smooth dough forms. Divide the dough into 4 portions and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or until the dough is firm.

Roll out each portion of dough between 2 sheets of non-stick baking paper until 3mm thick. Remove the baking paper and use a 7cm star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out 8 rounds from each sheet. Place the cookies on baking trays lined with baking paper, sprinkle with the clear sanding sugar and bake for 8 minutes or until the cookies are light golden. Cool on wire racks. Makes 32.

Sanding sugar has large coarse granules. It is used to decorate cakes and biscuits.

…well as some of you might know, we have been in Melbourne for the last little while launching our brand new spring summer 2011 collection ‘here comes the sun’ at the life in style trade event!…the range was really well received & we are now really excited to get it online for you to all see!

Until then [next Monday] we wanted to share with you a little secret we found in Melbourne, just near where we were staying! We spent many a night here, as our little home away from home. Great food, too many wines & chats about what to do next – including exciting things with pony hair – stay tuned!
